Day 7 – Liam’s Birthday!
What a wonderful day we had!!
Our day started late, since my alarm didn’t go off, but Liam and I were invited to join Janet and Leevi along with their two Korean friends Jessica and Anne, to go to Daegu, aka, Taegu, aka the birthplace of both Leevi and Liam. How very special that we, first off, were granted permission to leave the tour schedule, let alone, Janet’s friends meeting us on the tour when we were only 1 hour from Daegu – all this on Liam’s birthday…. It was so surreal to be in the same county, let alone the same city on the same day Liam was born…. Very cool!!!
Something I guess we take for granted and certainly something I didn’t even consider a possibility!
While there, we visited a few places where Liam got a new pair of really cool shoes, I bought a new digital camera at an amazing price, and the absolute best stop was at….. at Korean MacDonald’s!! So Liam was still able to have his much promised “Birthday Big Mac”. According to the boys, they tasted exactly the same as in Canada. Janet and I experimented with the Bulgogi burger…. Sort of a big Mac style sandwich made from bulgogi (Korean style beef) – it was really good!
We headed back to meet our group and toured a Buddhist temple – one of the most famous in Asia. We learned the traditional Buddhist bow while there. Next, we went to a cave whereas Buddha was uncovered about 100 years ago. Made of white marble, it is the only Buddha structure in Korea (and possibly all of Asia) that faces East… to protect the land from Japan.
For restoration purposes, we were not permitted to take a photo which is a shame, as it was absolutely incredible to see.
We were given some down time back at our condo before dinner and just before we ate our “leader” Andy instructed everyone to meet in one of the condo rooms. This is where everyone on the trip gathered and sang Happy Birthday to Liam in both Canadian and Korean, and presented him with a handmade card that was signed by everyone on the tour… what a special gift to have. I’ll be sure to laminate it to ensure he has it for a keepsake.
Looking forward to our trip to the Hyundai plant tomorrow!
